This recipe is especially for anyone asking what is a good Halloween treat.
It is true that perhaps the most popular kind of Halloween treat is the candy kind that kids collect when they go door to door. Even thought that popular treat is a fun sized candy bar, it is the thrill of how it is earned that may make it taste even better.
However, not all treats at Halloween are candy in nature.
Homemade brownies are a Halloween treat that really can be enjoyed every day of the year.
Even better, brownies are perfect for sharing whether it be for dessert or for a gathering.
You may be wondering what makes a brownie a brownie.
Certainly, there are many different ways to make brownies these days.
Some brownies may not even be brown!
Brownies were invented out of a need to find a compromise of sorts between a slice of cake and something smaller like a cookie.
Earlier version of brownies did not even have chocolate in them (gasp!). They got the name because of the sweeteners that were used (such as molasses).
Baking fudgy brownies tips.
People seem to enjoy 'fudgy' or chocolaty brownies rather than 'dry' cake-like brownies.
Using certain ingredients are one way to get those fudgy brownies.
Here is how to make brownies more moist.
- My favorite tip for making fudgy or moist brownies is to add chocolate chips to the batter.
Chocolate chips are usually not part of the batter in homemade brownies. - It is important that you follow the directions as well as the ingredients amounts in this recipe. Adjusting ingredients or overmixing can affect your brownies and make them less moist.
- Use fresh ingredients. Old or out of date ingredients can also affect your brownie outcome.
Make these Halloween brownie sugar free or low sugar.
Making a few adjustments to the ingredients can give this recipe less sugar.
You should refer the packaging on the ingredients that you choose to make sure that they will work and how to use them in a recipe.
Try using these substitutions.
- Use a granulated sugar alternative that can be baked with instead of sugar. That alternative should be able to be baked with and should measure 1:1 with sugar.
- Also, use sugar free chocolate chips instead of regular chocolate chips.
- Use sugar free decorations if possible.

Step one. Make the brownies. Preheat your oven to 325. Line a square pan with parchment paper that overhangs the edges of the pan. In a medium bowl, use a whisk or a fork to combine together the flour, baking soda, cornstarch, and cocoa powder. Set this bowl aside.
Next, in a mixing bowl, beat together the vegetable oil and the sugar until creamy, Then beat in the eggs and the vanilla extract. Lastly, mix in the dry ingredients until just blended. Fold in ½ cup of the chocolate chips and then transfer to the prepared baking pan for baking. Bake for 20-35 minutes, testing in more than one location for doneness with a toothpick.
Step two. Decorate the brownies. Allow the brownies to fully cool. Then using the overhanging parchment paper, lift the cooled brownies from the pan and place on to a flat surface. Microwave the remaining chocolate chips until melted, stopping to stir every 15 seconds. To thin out the chocolate you can add a bit of oil or coconut oil as needed. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the brownies and add the eyes for decoration. Once cooled you can cut the brownies and serve.
