Certainly not everyone has a young child or knows what a Minion is.
What you should know is that these characters are very popular with a certain age group.

Tips for making Minion clay pots.

My Minions were made using two and a half inch clay pots found at a dollar store. You can really use the clay pots of your choice as long as they are the basic terra cotta kind of clay pot.

    More tips for you

    1. My clay pots have been turned upside down so that they can have hair. Feel free to not turn yours upside down so that they can be used to hold something...such as a plant 🙂 .
    2. To help the googly eyes stay on, my Minions have water bottle caps attached to the backside of the eyes. While the caps have been painted, you can simply use white or clear ones. What is important is that they are the same size.
    3. Lastly, there is a bit of painting that needs to be done. Please allow the paint to fully dry between coats.

    Personalize your painted flower pots.

These painted pots are inspired by the popular movie characters.
While they are indeed adorable, they can also be even better.

    Try one of these ideas.

    • Use a marker to write names on the pots and use them as place settings.
    • While these characters are usually yellow and blue, paint them another color such as red or pink.
    • Use cardboard or felt to make hands and feet to attach to your minion.

How to make Minions out of Flower Pots.

This is a great family fun craft activity to complete with kids. You can also mix and match different sizes of clay pots, eyes and expressions to thus create Minions for hours of creative play.

    Step One: prepare and basecoat.

Gather all of your needed project materials. Remove any packaging and labels from the pots.

Basecoat the top (once the pots are turned upside down) of the clay pots with yellow acrylic craft paint. Then allow for the paint dry before applying a second coat, also if necessary.

Next, apply topcoat the rim (which will be the bottom once the pot is turned upside down) of the clay pots with blue acrylic craft paint. Set this aside to dry. You can apply a second coat, if necessary.

Lastly, basecoat the plastic water bottle caps with metallic silver acrylic craft paint. Let the paint dry and then apply a second coat, however if necessary.

Step Two: attach detail elements to the pots.

We will paint a black line around the circumference of the minion at the level of the eyes to make the band for the goggles. Use the black acrylic craft paint and paint this line approximately one inch down from the top (the pot is turned upside down) of the clay pot with a small flat paintbrush. Let the paint dry and then apply a second coat, however if necessary.

For the hair, cut the black chenille stems into smaller sections with scissors. Insert into the drain hole at the top of the clay pot and secure with a glue gun and glue sticks. Style the Minion hair as desired.

EXPERT TIP: You can however use liquid craft or similar glue for this project instead of the glue gun, but you would have to wait for it to dry.

For the eyes, glue the on to the dried painted plastic water bottle caps securing with a glue gun and glue sticks.
Then attach one or two eyes to each Minion along the black band with a glue gun and glue sticks.

    Step Three: finish the project.

Using a permanent black marker, draw on the Minions mouths, creating a variety of expressions. Then you can draw on the stitches around the rim of the clay pot to mimic the Minions overalls.
