What is the best cookie for Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving cookies may be underrated when it comes to desserts thanks to those tasty pies that we are so use to seeing after eating all of that turkey. However, Thanksgiving cookies are popular any time leading up to Thanksgiving including that special day.

The best cookies for Thanksgiving are usually the ones that feature a Thanksgiving motif, such as a turkey. Even better, since the holiday may be all about family gatherings with kids, cookies that kids can help decorate may be the best!

    What are wafer cookies?

This recipe uses wafer cookies because of their long rectangular shape.
Using these rectangular cookies gives our turkey cookies the perfect shape.

Wafer cookies are a kind of sandwich cookie with a creamy center.
The outer cookies surrounding the creamy center are a light yet, crispy cookies.

Tips for making Thanksgiving turkey cookies.

This project is suitable for most ages. However, some folks may need a bit of assistance when working with the warm chocolate that is used.

    More tips for you

    1. Use a rimmed baking sheet that can fit easily into your refrigerator as a holding area for your turkey cookies. This will make it easier to transfer the cookies as needed.
    2. Cookies that are at room temperature work best when putting your turkeys together. If your cookies have been refrigerated or the chocolate coating is soft, allow the cookies to get to room temperature first for best results.
    3. Once these cookies are set, they can be stored in an airtight container. I suggest that they be stored alternating the cookies so that the top of one cookie is surrounded by the bottoms of the two cookies on its side. This will help to keep the candy corn attached and also fit the cookies into the container better.

    Personalize your Thanksgiving Chocolate Cookies.

These turkey cookies are both super cute and easy to make and eat.
However, you can also make yours better.

    Try one of these ideas.

    • Use a different kind of cookies such as Nutter Butter or Oreo cookies.
    • Use different colored candy corn other than the usual orange and yellow kind.
    • Add some Thanksgiving inspired edible sprinkles to your cookies.

How to make Thanksgiving Turkey Wafer Cookies

This recipe is for 9-10 cookies. Simply increase the chocolate as needed for the glue if you want to make more.
    Active Time: 10 minutes
    Resting time: 30 minutes

    Step One: prepare.

Prepare your work area. Use a rimmed baking sheet that can fit into your refrigerator. Line that baking sheet with wax or parchment paper. Also, select cookies that are in good condition to use. If you need to coat your cookies with the chocolate, do so and then allow for the chocolate to set.

Expert Tip 👉If you are dipping your own cookies and are intending to make these turkeys very soon, allow the cookies to 'almost' set rather than 'fully' set. Doing so may allow you to simply press or place the candy in place thus, bypassing the melting chocolate step below.

Step Two: melt the chocolate chips.

In a microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate according to the packaging directions. Allow the chocolate to somewhat cool before using. If your chocolate is need thinning out, stir in a teaspoon or two of coconut oil as needed.

Step Three: attach the features to the cookies.

Use a toothpick or straw (or similar utensil) to place dabs of melted chocolate where needed to attach the candy pieces to the cookie.

    1. For the eyes- place two dabs of chocolate side by side about in the center of the cookie, leaving space between them for the nose. Press the eyes in place.
    2.  For the nose, Run a dab of chocolate from the center of the eyes down for the nose and place the M&M in the dab.
    3. Finish the turkeys by applying melted chocolate above the eyes and pressing the candy corn in place to resemble feathers.

Lastly, place the turkeys in your refrigerator to set (about a half hour).
