Frequently asked questions about Christmas Crack.

What exactly is Christmas Crack?

Christmas crack is a simple recipe made with saltine crackers and chocolate.
While it can be enjoyed any time of the year, this snack recipe is especially popular during the holiday season.

Christmas crack got its name be from how it is broken into servings.
That is, this recipe is make on a baking sheet as a whole and then it is cracked into servings (well, you could use a knife or kitchen mallet to break yours up if desired).

What is in Christmas Crack?

There are usually three layers in Christmas Crack.
These layers complement one another to make the perfect snack idea.

The bottom layer is a salty crunchy layer made with saltine crackers. Above that is a toffee or caramel layer which is then topped with melted chocolate.

Tips for making Chocolate Crack.

Line your rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper that overhangs the edges of the pan. This will make it easier for you to remove the crack from the baking sheet when the crack has set.

More tips for you

  1. When laying out your crackers, place them in a single layer side by side. This will help all of the crackers get evenly covered with the other ingredients.
  2. The center layer of this recipe is made with a simple homemade caramel. It is a good idea to use a candy thermometer to make sure that the caramel hits the correct temperature (about 270 degrees).
  3. This Christmas crack should be stored in an airtight container. If properly stored at room temperature, it should keep for a couple of weeks.

How to make Christmas Crack even better!

This recipe is so easy and tasty just the way it is.
However, you can make yours even better!

Try one of these ideas.

  • Add candy or crushed cookies to the top with the sprinkles.
  • Use white chocolate instead of or with the regular chocolate (you can add food dye too!).
  • Use a different kind of cracker such as oyster crackers or Ritz crackers instead of saltines.

How to make this Easy Recipe for Christmas Crack

Prep time 15 minutes
Cook time 5-8 minutes
Yields 24

Step One:prepare

Prepare a rimmed baking sheet for nonstick. Then arrange the saltines side by side so that they touch one another but, do not overlap. (I like to use parchment paper that overhangs the edges of the sheet.) Preheat your oven to 400. .

Step Two: Make the caramel toffee center.

In a saucepan over medium-low heat, combine together the butter and brown sugar, stirring as it heats up. Bring this to a boil (two to three minutes, 270 degrees). Carefully, pour this over the crackers that you prepared in the last step, evenly covering all of the crackers. Place the baking sheet into your oven until the ingredients bubble (about five to seven minutes) and then remove the baking sheet from the oven and place on a heat safe work space.

Step Three: finish making the crack.

Quickly disperse the chocolate chips over the warm ingredients so that the chips melt. Then add any additional toppings such as sprinkles. Once the crack has set, you can use the parchment paper to flip it over on to a clean work area and break into pieces.

Expert Tip👉 Freeze (10-20 minutes) or Refrigerate (about an hour) the Christmas Crack to help it set or in place.
