How to Make Frosted Cinnamon Swirl Cookies.

Frosted Cinnamon Swirl Cookies, delicious soft and buttery bakery-style cookies topped with creamy frosting and cinnamon sugar.

    • Prep Time 30 minutes .
    • Bake Time 10-12 minutes .
    • Servings 10 cookies, depending on how large of a scoop you use. .
    • How to serve : Serve fully assembled with your favorite beverage.
    • Notes: You will need mixing bowls, whisk, rubber spatula or similar item, cookie scoop, and a piping bag if you decide to pipe the frosting.

    1. Prepare. Preheat your oven to 350f. Also prep your baking pans for nonstick. Parchment paper works in this recipe.
    2. Dry Ingredients for Cookie. In a medium bowl, use a whisk to combine together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon and salt.
    3. Wet Ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together on medium speed until creamy and lump-free (about two to three minutes). Then scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix in the egg and vanilla extract.
    4. Combine. Set the mixer speed on low and gradually add the dry ingredients from the second step mixing until just combined. You may need to stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl.
    5. Scoop. Use a cookie scoop (a large cookie scoop was used to make my cookies) to scoop out the cookie dough, roll the dough between your hands, and then use a bottom of a glass or the palm of your hand to gently press the rolled dough onto your cookie sheets about two inches apart.
    6. Cinnamon Sugar Topping. In a clean bowl, combine together the softened butter, sugars (both white and brown), the cinnamon, and flour until combined. Then place about 1–2 teaspoons of the cinnamon sugar topping in the center of each cookie. Use a butter knife or similar item to gently spread the topping over each of the cookies, leaving a small border around the edges of the cookies (about a quarter inch).
    7. Bake. Bake the cookies 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden and the centers are slightly soft and underdone. Then allow the cookies to fully set and cool on the baking sheet before moving on.
    8. Frosting. To make the frosting, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and combined. Beat in the vanilla extract and then stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Set the mixer to low or slow speed and gradually add the powdered sugar and mix until you reach a smooth texture. You can then transfer the frosting to a piping bag.
    9. Cinnamon Sugar. To make the cinnamon sugar, in a small bowl use a whisk to combine together the ingredients.
    10. Assemble. Once your cookies have fully cooled and set, you can add the frosting either using a piping bag or a frosting knife (icing spatula) Then top each cookie with your cinnamon sugar.

Tips for making the best frosted cinnamon cookies.

This recipe is easy to make as long as you follow the individual steps as indicated. It is most important that you allow the cookies to fully cool before adding the frosting as the frosting will melt if the cookies are still warm.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. The dairy ingredients (egg, butter, cream cheese) need to be at room temperature for optimal blending. To soften the butter and cream cheese you can simply set them on your counter about a half hour to an hour before making this recipe.
    2. Using a cookie scoop allows you to have evenly sized cookies which will bake more uniformly. You should flatten or press each dough ball to about ½–¾ inch tall and about two inches wide.
    3. Remove the cookies from your oven when the edges are set and the centers still look slightly soft. They will continue to firm up as they cool. Make sure that that cookies are fully cool before adding the frosting.

    FAQ

    • Can I make the dough ahead of time?
Absolutely. The cookie dough can be covered and refrigerated for up to 48 hours before baking. Let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes if it becomes too firm to scoop.
    • Can I make these cookies ahead of time?
Yes! You can bake the cookies 1–2 days in advance and store them in an airtight container. Then frost your cookies on the day you plan to serve them for the freshest appearance and texture.
    • Why did my cookies spread too much?
Spreading can happen if the butter was too warm, the dough was overmixed, or the baking sheet was warm when the dough was placed on it. Chilling the dough for 20–30 minutes can help prevent excess spreading.
    • Why are my cookies dry?
Dry cookies are often caused by adding too much flour or baking too long. Make sure that you measure the flour carefully and remove the cookies from the oven when the centers still look slightly soft.
    • Can I skip the cream cheese frosting?
Of course! The cookies are delicious on their own or with a simple vanilla glaze instead of cream cheese frosting.

    Variations.

    • For a 'Snickerdoodle' style cookie, roll the cookie dough balls in the cinnamon sugar before baking, then frost after cooling for a snickerdoodle-inspired version.
    • Add a crunchy element mixing in a ½ cup of finely chopped pecans or walnuts into the cookie dough or sprinkle them over the frosting for a cinnamon-roll-inspired crunch.
    • Turn your cookies into sandwich cookies by spreading frosting between two cooled cookies to create soft and decadent cinnamon cookie sandwiches.

How to store cinnamon swirl cookies.

Once the cookies have fully cooled, have been frosted, and set, they can be stored in an airtight container in a single layer or in layers separated by parchment paper. When properly stored, frosted cinnamon cookies should keep for up to five days when refrigerated or frozen for up to a couple of months.
