Frequently asked questions about cinnamon rolls.
Technically, they are the same thing.
However, some folks believe that they rolls and buns may differ.
A cinnamon roll may be smaller than a bun and may have a glaze rather than a frosting. Cinnamon buns are believed to be larger, more decadent, and have frosting on top.
This recipe is intended to be decadent and flavorful.
As a result, it needed to be moist and have a good balance of flavors.
Adding heavy cream to the rolls before baking will give the rolls more moisture and make them more tender and gooey. This is an optional step in this recipe as some folks do not like their rolls to be tender and gooey. 🙂

My rolls were made in a rectangular baking dish. It is a good idea to grease your baking dish well before adding these rolls.
More tips for you
- If you want a really extra-gooey roll, you can melt the butter before adding it to the filling ingredients. Also, you can decrease the baking time to 18-20 minutes.
- Make these rolls jumbo sized or thinner sized. Simply adjust how thick you cut the dough and how long you bake the rolls as needed.
- These rolls taste best when you allow them to cool to room temperature before serving. Doing so will allow for the rolls to set properly.
Personalize homemade cinnamon rolls.
This recipe for cinnamon rolls is amazing just the way it is.
However, you can make yours even better!
Try one of these ideas.
- Make this as a 'pull-apart' bread by tightly placing the dough in a round baking pan for baking. You may need to adjust baking times for this.
- Instead of using my frosting recipe, omit the frosting and use a glaze.
- Evenly spread the frosting over the rolls and make this into a kind of breakfast cake roll idea.

Yield: 16 rolls
Prep: 1 hr 15 mins
Bake time: 20-25 mins
Step One: prepare.
Prepare your baking dish by greasing it well. Also, prepare a clean workspace to be used for kneading the bread. You can dust the work surface with flour. Also, grease a bowl that can be used for the dough to rise in.
For Step Two: we will make the dough.
- Start by dissolving the yeast in the warm milk, use a fork to gently stir this.
- Meanwhile, in a stand mixer, beat together the sugar and butter until almost combined.
- Scape down the bowl and then add the yeast and milk mixture along with the flour and the eggs. Beat this on medium until smooth (one and a half to two minutes).
- Transfer the dough on to your prepared work surface and knead until smooth (about five to six minutes).
- Place the dough into the greased bowl, roll the dough over, and then cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or wrap.
- Allow the dough to double in size (about an hour).
Next, Step Three: make the rolls.
- Place a large piece of parchment paper on your clean workspace and then dust the paper with flour.
- Dividing the dough in half to make the rolls in two batches is an easy way to do this.
- Roll the first half of dough out to a 9X12" rectangle (12"side facing you).
- In a medium bowl, combine together the filling ingredients. Then brush the filling over the rectangle to about ½" of the edges.
- Roll the dough towards you using the 12" side opposite from you.
- Use your floss or twine to cut the roll into eight slices.
- Place the sliced pieces into the prepared baking dish and repeat this process with the remaining dough.
- Cover the baking dish with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
Let the rolls rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about an hour).
Step Four: Finish making the rolls.
- Preheat your oven to 350.
- Bake the rolls until they turn golden brown (20-25 minutes).
- Allow the rolls to cool before combining the frosting ingredients and frosting the buns.
Expert Tip 👉Go heavy on spreading out the frosting to make this more like an actual Cinnabon style roll. You can warm up additional frosting to pour over the sides of the rolls when serving.
