How to plan the location for a water garden.

Planning the location in your yard where you plan on placing your water garden is a lot like planning the location that you will place any other garden. That is, there are factors to consider when planning any garden.

Here is what to look for in a location for your water garden.

    • A flat or level spot is easiest to work with.
    • The location should get at least six hours of sunlight a day.
    • Your location should also be one that is not prone to flooding.
    • Make sure that you will have access to water, even if it via a hose.
    • Consider Electricity if you plan to have a pump or filter in your water garden.
    • The soil in the area where you are planning to build your water garden in should be loamy or sandy. The problem with clay soils is that they are difficult to drain because they are compact.
    • Lastly, select a visual location so that you can easily see the garden from your window or seating area in your yard.

👉 There are two main kinds of water gardens that are commonly used. A 'potted' water garden is a self-contained water garden that can be grown in a pot or container. An 'an in ground' water garden is actually built into the ground itself, usually using a liner.

How to design a water garden.

Once you have decided on a location for your garden you can think about the size and the shape that you want to make it. Then you can think about a budget and what kind of a water garden you want to make.

Here is what else to consider when designing a water garden.

    • When selecting plants for your garden, choose plants that will thrive in your location and with the amount of sunlight available. You can visit your local nursery for for details.
    • Decide what kind of fish or other inhabitants you would like to in your water. A local pet store may be able to help you with this.
    • Other items such as stepping stones or statues that will decorate your water garden.

What to buy in order to set up a container water garden.

A container water garden can be as simple as buying a container for water gardens and adding some water. While a pump may be optional, it is a really good idea to have on.

What to buy in order to set up a basic water garden container.

    • The container for water gardens that is at least a foot deep and a foot and a half wide and has a drainage hole.
    • Water garden soil- a potting mix that is designed for water gardens with a blend of peat moss, sand, and perlite.
    • Water garden plants such as water lilies, lotus, and water hyacinths.
    • Water garden pump and filter- many water garden containers may come with one. A pump and filter are essential for keeping your water garden healthy as the pump will circulate the water (preventing algae growth) and the filter will remove debris from the water.
    • Rocks, gravel, and water features as desired

What to buy in order to set up an inground water garden.

An inground water garden is a bit more complicated as it is larger and requires a bit of 'elbow grease' to install. It is also a more permanent water garden solution.

Items needed to make a basic inground water garden.

    • A water garden liner is used to keep the water in your water garden and prevent it from seeping into the ground.
    • Water garden pump and filter- many water garden containers may come with one. A pump and filter are essential for keeping your water garden healthy as the pump will circulate the water (preventing algae growth) and the filter will remove debris from the water.
    • Rocks and gravel to both personalize your garden and to help to keep the water clean and prevent algae growth.
    • Water garden plants such as water lilies, lotus, and water hyacinths.
    • And also water features for your garden.

How to install a container water garden.

It is always best to first consult the directions that came with your container for best results. There may also be special instructions for preparing that specific container.

General steps for installing a basic container garden once you have selected a location.

Once you have all of your supplies, you can start setting up your water garden.

    1. Start by filling the pot or container with water garden soil that is two to three inches thick (or as directed on plant instructions).
    2. According the plant directions, plant your water plants into the soil.
    3. Next, add water to the pot or container to just below the tops of the plants.
    4. Install the pump and filter according to the directions.
    5. Add a layer of rocks and gravel to the container.
    6. Lastly, add any desired water features.

What kind of water should you use in a container water garden?

While it is a good idea to first check with the instructions for your container, here is what is commonly used.

    • Rainwater as it is soft and free of chlorine and other chemicals that can be harmful to plants.
    • Tap water that is first allowed to sit for 24 hours in order for the chlorine to dissipate.
    • Distilled water is especially good for preventing algae growth. However, since distilled water i does not contain any minerals it can be harmful to plants over time.

How to install an inground water garden.

    Step One: installation.

Once you have cleared permissions and informed local utility companies as needed, you can start installing your garden into the ground.

    1. Dig a hole that is deep enough to accommodate the liner as well as your desired plant and fish species.
    2. It is a good idea to add a layer of sand to the bottom of the pond hole to protect the liner.
    3. To install the liner, open up the liner over the hole and smooth out any wrinkles or folds as these can cause leakage.
    4. Add rocks and edging as this can help to hold the liner in place. Do this by placing the rocks around the edge of the pond.
    5. Then you can add a layer of gravel or pebbles to the bottom of the hole to improve drainage and prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged.
    6. After you have added the gravel or pebbles, you can add a layer of water garden soil that is about two to three inches thick.
How to Build a Water Garden, a simple guide that including what plants to place in your backyard garden with water.

Step Two: fill your water garden.

Once you have prepared the water garden you can start adding the plants, water, and then the fish.

    1. Add your water garden plants to the prepared location according to the instructions that came with the plant.
    2. Next, you can add water the the hold up to just below the tops of the plants.
    3. Next install the filtration system according to the instructions. This is include a pump, skimmer, and biological filter.
    4. Lastly, you can add your fish according the directions and any optional water features.

Step Three: how to maintain a water garden.

Maintaining your water garden can ensure that your pond stays healthy, enjoyable and attractive.

      1. Use a test kit to monitor the pH level, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels of the water.
      2. Clean the filter to remove any debris or buildup that can clog the filter and reduce its efficiency.
      3. Skim the surface of the water regularly to remove leaves, twigs, and other debris that can accumulate and create a buildup of organic matter.
      4. Control algae growth using an algaecide or by adding beneficial bacteria to the water.
      5. Add oxygen to the water using an aerator or fountain to add oxygen to the water. This will help keep the water circulating and prevent it from becoming stagnant.
      6. Trim and prune plants to prevent them from overgrowing and taking over the pond.
      7. Monitor your fish to ensure they are healthy.
      8. Lastly, prepare for cold weather by removing any plants that are not winter-hardy, covering the pond with netting to keep out debris, and installing a heater to prevent the water from freezing.
