Ingredients needed to make fudgy homemade brownies with candies.
- Flour. Regular all purpose flour was used to make my brownies.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder. While you could use Dutch process for a more intense chocolate flavor, I think that that the cocoa powder adds to the fudgy texture of these brownies.
- Butter. If you are using unsalted butter you can add a half teaspoon of salt to the flour.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate. You can use chips or a bar that has been broken up (used in my brownies).
- Eggs. Room temperature for better blending.
- Vanilla Extract. Added for a bit of flavor balance.
- M&M Candies. Original and mini M&Ms were used in making my brownies to make them more interesting. You can use the candies of your choice.

More helpful tips for you.
- A mixture of original and mini M&Ms were used in this recipe, however any variety of M&Ms can be used.
- A microwave was used to melt the chocolate and butter when making my brownies. You can however, use the stove-top method using a double boiler to get the same results.
- Chocolate filled candies were used in making my brownies. Feel free to use peanut M&M's or another kind instead of /or with the plain candies. Or, you can add some chopped walnuts.
- Adding a teaspoon or two of espresso will bring out the chocolate flavor although, there is plenty of chocolate in this recipe already.
- The fudgy texture is the result of properly combining your ingredients. When you combine together the dry and wet ingredients, mix until just combined to keep the flour gluten from making these brownies tough.
- Line you baking dish with parchment paper that overhangs the sides of the dish. This will make it easier for you to lift the brownies out of the pan for slicing.
- When you take your brownies out of the oven, you can press additional candies into the top of the brownies, strategically placed, to make your brownies even prettier.
How to make Fudgy M&M Brownies
Prep Time: 15 minutes .
Bake Time: 25 minutes .
Servings: 16 brownies, depending on how they are cut .
- Prep. Preheat your oven to 350. Prep a square baking dish for nonstick. My brownies were made in a 9X9" baking dish.
- Dry Ingredients. In a medium bowl, use a whisk to combine together your flour and unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Melt your chocolate. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt together your butter and semi-sweet chocolate, stopping every 30 seconds to stir (about 1 ½-2 minutes). Then set this aside as you work.
- Mixing Bowl. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the brown sugar and eggs until creamy (about 1 ½-2 minutes). Stir in the vanilla extract and then beat in the melted chocolate and butter from the third step.
- Add the dry ingredients . You can now add the dry ingredients from the second step to the mixing bowl and mix until just combined (a few lumps will be okay as they will bake out).
- Add the M&M's. Use a rubber spatula or similar item to gently fold in ¾ of a cup of the M&M's. Image #2.
- Bake. Transfer the brownie batter to your prepared baking dish. Image #3. Then sprinkle the remaining candies on top. Bake the brownies for 25-27 minutes or until the edges are firm.
- Cool. Allow the brownies to completely cool before using the parchment paper to lift them from the baking dish for slicing.
Expert Tip 👉 Using the toothpick method for checking your brownies for doneness may not be accurate as you are dealing with soft chocolate. While you should avoid over-baking your brownies, keep in mind that they will be somewhat soft in the center when you take them out of the oven but, they should set while they cool.
How to store brownies.
Once they have fully cooled, these brownies should be stored in an airtight container. When properly stored, these brownies should keep for about three days at room temperature or up to three months when frozen
