This simplified recipe uses brownie mix to make the cake and cherry pie filling to make the cherry filling with. The topping is a homemade whipped mousse made with a whipping cream base (easy!).

My cupcakes are made in a standard cupcake pan. This recipe can also be made in a mini cupcake pan or jumbo cupcake pan (baking times can vary depending on the size of the pan).
More tips for you
- Make sure that you are using cupcake liners as these can stick to the pan. You can also lightly spray the liners as needed.
- When spooning the batter into the cups, do so the quarters of the of the way full. Over filling the cups will make it hard to add the cherry filling.
- When you bake the brownies bake them until they appear to be set but, still a bit moist in the center. This will make it easier to make a well in the center to hold the cherry filling.

- Boxed Brownie Mix. A standard 15-16 ounce box should work.
- Vegetable Oil. Any neutral oil can be used.
- Water. Used to make the brownies.
- Egg. Your egg should be at room temperature for better blending.
- Cherry Pie Filling. My cupcakes were made with a can of pie filling.
- Heavy Whipping Cream. This should be chilled.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder. To make the mousse chocolate.
- Powdered Sugar. To make the mousse sweet and decadent of course

How to make Black Forest Brownie Cupcakes
Prep Time:10 minutes.
Bake Time: 20 minutes.
Servings: 8.
Step One: make the brownie cupcakes.
- Preheat your oven to 350 and prep your cupcake pan well for nonstick. I like to use liners.
- Place the brownie mix in a mixing bowl and use a fork or a whisk to break up any lumps. Then beat in the oil, water, and the egg until just combined.
- Use a spoon to fill the cupcake liners three fourths of the way full.
- Bake the cupcakes for 18-20 minutes or until the sides of the cupcakes are set and the center is still somewhat soft.
- Carefully remove the cupcakes from the oven and use the backside of a measuring spoon to make an indent or well in the center of each of the cupcakes to hold the filling.
- Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for five minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to completely cool.
Step Two: make the mousse.
- Use a clean mixing bowl and clean beaters to make this. Also make this mousse just before using it, when the brownies have fully cooled.
- In a stand mixers outfitter with a whisk or beater attachment, beat the heavy whipping cream, cocoa powder, and the sugar on medium high until stiff peaks form.
- Use a teaspoon to evenly place a spoonful or two (depending on the size of you cupcakes) into the center well that you created in each of the cupcakes. Then place the the cupcakes on a rimmed tray or baking dish and refrigerate them until set ( few hours).
- You can refrigerate leftover mousse covered for about a day.
Expert Tip 👉 If you whipping whipping cream begins to curdle you have probably over worked it and you may want to start over.
Step Three: finish making the cupcakes.
- Remove the cupcakes from your refrigerator, use a spoon to add the cherry pie filling on top of the mousse in each of the cupcakes.
- Top each of the cupcakes with whipped cream .
- You can add additional cherry filling on top before serving.
