Why we love this easy waffle recipe.
This waffle recipe is based upon a basic recipe. What is different about it is that we are adding bacon and cheese to make it taste even better.
Here is what else we like about this recipe for
- Bacon and cheddar waffles actually taste amazing with maple syrup on top!
- This recipe can easily be customized my switching out the cheese or adding a few spiced to it.
- Waffles can be served with a glass of milk or orange juice as well as a cup of coffee.
- The cheddar cheese and bacon perfectly compliment one another contributing to a savory and slightly salty waffle.
- These waffles taste great with an egg on top.
- About anyone who can operate a waffle iron can make this recipe.
Ingredients needed to make this simple savory waffle recipe.
- Flour. Regular all purpose flour that is measured and leveled.
- Baking Powder. Added for leavening to make these waffles fluffy.
- Egg. Your egg should be at room temperature for optimal blending.
- Milk. Using a full fat milk will add more moisture to your waffles.
- Bacon Bits. The bacon should be cooked. This is a great idea for using up day old bacon too!
- Cheddar Cheese. I like a sharp cheddar cheese for this recipe. The cheese should be shredded or grated.
Expert Tip 👉 Some folks like to use buttermilk instead of regular milk when making waffles. Buttermilk will make for a thicker and flavorful batter. However, the waffle will also turn out thicker due to the additional acidity resulting in a less crisp and more fluffy waffle.

Tips for making the best waffles.
This is one of those recipes that works best when the ingredients used in it are fresh. This is especially true for the dry ingredients.
More helpful tips for you.
- When combining the ingredients, mix them until they are just combined. Over-mixing the batter can ruin the texture (a few lumps are okay as they should cook out).
- Preheating your waffle iron can help ensure even waffle cooking while preventing the batter from sticking.
- Some folks like to let waffle batter rest for 10 minutes or so. Doing this allows for the gluten to relax resulting in a more tender waffle.
- Follow the manufacturers directions on how to prep your waffle maker for nonstick. Even if your iron is non-stick, preparing the waffle maker can help prevent sticking while contributing to a crispier crust.
- Make this recipe vegetarian by using a bacon bit alternative.
- Take this recipe up a notch be adding a chopped pepper to the batter.
How to make Bacon and Cheddar Cheese Waffles
Prep Time: 5 minutes .
Cook Time: 40 minutes.
Servings: 8 servings .
- Start by preheating your waffle maker according to manufacturer’s instructions. I like to lightly spray mine with a bit of oil as well.
- In a large bowl, use a whisk to combine together the flour and the baking powder. Then whisk in the milk and egg until just combined.
- Use a rubber spatula or similar item to fold in the bacon bits and cheese.
- Depending on the size of your waffle maker, you can use a cookie scoop or measuring cup to fill the center of the waffle make about half full.
- Cook the waffles until fully cooked through in the center and the outside is turning golden brown (refer to the manufacturers directions).
- Repeat this process until all of your waffles have been made.
Expert Tip👉 Working in batches can mean older waffles getting cold. You can keep the waffles warm in an oven set to 250 for up to a half hour. Place the waffles on a parchment paper lined baking sheet so that they do not overlap.
How to store leftover waffles.
Once your waffles have fully cooled, they can be stored in an airtight container. When properly stored, they should keep for about five days refrigerated or longer when frozen.
