- Tomatoes. I really like Roma tomatoes for this recipe as they have the perfect flavor and less water to have to deal with. Your tomatoes should be diced.
- Onion. Red or white onions are both great for this recipe. The onions should also be diced.
- Jalapeno. Remove the seeds and stem and the finely dice this.
- Cilantro. You an usually find fresh cilantro in the produce department of most grocery stores. The cilantro should be chopped.
- Lime Juice. This adds flavor as well as helps to preserve the pico de gallo. Use a fresh lime.
- Seasonings. Salt and pepper were used to make my pico however, you can use the seasonings of your choice.
- Optional Add-Ins. Minced garlic, corn, chopped green peppers, or diced celery for an added crunch.

Tips for making the best pico de gallo.
Using fresh ingredients is always best for a recipe such as this one. However, if you are in a pinch you can cheat with canned diced tomatoes with other ingredients (I always have a few cans on hand for recipes).
More helpful tips for you.
- When selecting tomatoes to use in this recipe, select rips tomatoes that are intact, firm, and are on the plump side. Roma tomatoes have less water in them which is why I like them for this recipe.
- For added heat you can add more jalapeno. If you are not a fan of the heat simply use a mild pepper instead.
- Leaving the seeds in you jalapeno can also up the heat in this recipe.
- You can double this recipe if needed to make more to share.
- The secret to making a great tasting pico de gallo is to allow time for the ingredients to meld together in the refrigerator. As little as 20 minutes can make a difference in flavor.
- If your pico seems watery, which can happen, simply use a slotted spoon to serve it with.
How to make this Classic Pico de Gallo Recipe
Prep Time: 15 minutes .
Servings: 2 cups .
- Dice your tomatoes and onions if you have no done so. Then place them in a medium bowl.
- Then chop your jalapeno and cilantro and add them to the bowl.
- Use a spoon and fork (or similar items) to give the ingredients a quick toss.
- Drizzle the lime juice on top of the ingredients and toss again.
- Toss in the seasonings, making adjustments as needed for flavor.
- Refrigerate the ingredients for at least 10-20 minutes before serving to allow the ingredients to meld together.
Expert Tip👉 Be careful when handling peppers and their seeds. I like to wear food grade gloves or wash my immediately after handling peppers.
How to store homemade pico de gallo.
This recipe is always best when served fresh. Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container or jar and refrigerated for up to a few days. It is a good idea to give the pico a quick stir before serving.
