Tips for making the best chocolate balloon bowls.
It is best to follow the directions on the packaging for melting (microwave or double boiler methods) your chocolate wafers. The doubler boiler melting method is often preferred for even melting but, you can use the method of your choice.

How to make Edible Chocolate Balloon Bowls.
Prep Time: 5 minutes.
Cook Time: 5 minutes.
Chill Time: 30 minutes .
Serving Size: 6 bowls, depending on how large you make yours.
- To prepare, make sure that your balloons are clean and in good condition. Then blow the balloons up to your desired bowl size. You should prepare a few extra balloons to have on hand in case something goes wrong. You can spray the outside of the balloons with nonstick for easier removal after coating.
- If you are going to be adding chopped candy, nuts or something else to the outside of the bowls, place them into a shallow bowl. Lastly, line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Melt the chocolate according to the directions on the packaging (as overheating can ruin the texture of the chocolate for dipping). Allow the chocolate to cool for a few minutes to room temperature.
- While your chocolate is cooling you can carefully stir in other ingredients, such as chopped nuts, to give the bowls a cool looking texture. My bowls have two tablespoons of chopped peanut butter cups stirred in.
- Use a tablespoon to place dollops of melted chocolate on to the baking sheet where the coated balloons will go, leaving space between each dollop. This will create a flat bottom so that the bowls will be able to sit on a flat surface to eat out of later on.
- Carefully dip the balloons into the melted chocolate, using a spoon if necessary to help coat the balloon evenly. Coat the balloons only as far up as you want the bowls to be tall.
- Before the chocolate cools, sprinkle or dip the ingredients for the outside decoration oven the chocolate.
- Place the coated balloons onto parchment paper on top of the dollops you just made.
- Transfer the baking sheet to your refrigerator to set (this can take up to an hour).
- When your chocolate is fully set you can take the baking sheet out of the refrigerator.
- Pop the balloons very very slowly by cutting (use a toothpick) a tiny hole near the knot of the balloon. Then peel the deflated balloon away from the chocolate shells.
Expert Tip👉 Can you use chocolate chips instead of wafers to make these bowls? As long as you stir in coconut oil to help the chocolate get smooth for coating evenly. I would use dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips ( 1 ½ cups to 2 ½- 3 tbsp of coconut oil) since they are more sturdy for a recipe such as this one.
How to store chocolate balloons.
These chocolate balloons are best when served fresh. Leftovers should be stored in plastic wrap and refrigerated for up to four days or frozen for up to three months (transfer the bowls to the refrigerator to thaw before filling them).
