This is a simple recipe for baked brownies.
Once the brownies have cooled, we will decorate them to resemble that famous 'spell book'.

The term 'Hocus Pocus' was often used to describe the spells made by 'witches' in fictional depictions such as movies and books. Sometimes a witch would say "Hocus Pocus" while casting a spell in these depictions.
However, these days, the term is most associated with a popular fictional movie of the same name. In that movie there is a black cat that is also the inspiration for this project. 🐱
Everyone seems to have their own idea of what is a good brownie.
Some folks like a more cake-like brownie while other enjoy a more 'fudgy' brownie.
For a more cake- like brownie, add a bit more flour and baking powder.
But, for a more fudgy brownie, add a bit of extra butter or chocolate chips (🙋♀️).

I am providing you with a simple, yet tasty, recipe for making the brownies. You can however use the brownie recipe of your choice or even already baked brownies.
More tips for you
- For thicker brownies, you can use a smaller square pan such as a 6X6 or 8X8. However, for a thinner brownie or more brownies, you can use something larger.
- Lining your pan with parchment paper that overhangs the sides of your pan can make your life easier. Not only will it make for an easier clean up, it will make it easier for you to life the brownies out of the pan for cutting into pieces.
- Sometimes brownies can can fall apart at the edges when you go to cut them. However, you can prevent this from happening by spraying a bit of nonstick on your knife and refrigerating your brownies before cutting them.
- You can keep your brownies fresh by storing them stored in an airtight container at room temperature. If properly stored, these brownies should keep for four to five days.
Personalize spellbook brownies.

This is a simple recipe idea for making decorated brownies.
The brownies are decorated to look like the book from a popular Halloween movie.
To make this recipe you will first need to bake or purchase baked brownies.
Once cooled and cut, the brownies will be decorated using icing and edible elements. These brownies go well with a glass of milk or with a scoop of ice cream.
Ingredients needed to make Book Brownies.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder. This is what gives the brownies their famous color along with a bit of flavor. ⅓ cup.
- Flour. My brownies were made using all purpose flour. An alternative flour that measures like all purpose can be subbed in. ½ cup.
- Baking Powder. We are adding just a small amount to give the brownies a bit of height. ½ teaspoon.
- Butter. The butter should be melted. ½ cup melted.
- Sugar. The sugar adds the sweetness to balance out the unsweetened cocoa powder. 1 cup.
- Eggs. These should be lightly beaten.2
- Vanilla Extract. for flavor.1
- Black decorating icing/gel The gel does a nice job at making the details for the books.
- 12 candy eyeballs Small eyeballs fit best on the brownies.
How to make Hocus Pocus Spell Book Inspired Brownies
Serving Size: 12 | Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 25-30 minutes | Total time: 40-45 minutes.
Step One: Bake your brownies.
- Preheat your oven to 350 and prep a square baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, flour, and baking powder.
- Next, in a mixing bowl, beat together the sugar and butter until creamy. Then add the eggs and vanilla extract.
- Add in the dry ingredients from the first bowl with the ingredients in the mixing bowl and mix until just combined.
- Bake the brownies for 25 to 30 minutes or a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the brownies to fully cool before cutting and decorating.
Next, Step Two: prepare the brownies for decorating
- Allow your brownies to fully cool before cutting into pieces.
- Use the parchment paper to lift the cooled brownies from the pan.
- Cut the brownies into 12 equal rectangles. My brownies are 4X3".
Step Three: decorate the brownies to look like the book.
- Start by carefully pressing an edible eye into each of the brownies. You can the eye to go on the right side and about halfway down. Make sure that you leave enough edge space to draw circles around the eyes.
- Next, using the black decorating gel, draw a circle around each of the candy eyes.
- Lastly, use the decorating gel to make marks along the left side of the brownie from top to bottom to resemble the book seams.
