Materials needed to make a Patriotic Flag Wine Cork Craft DIY.
These materials should make a six by nine inch flag.
If you are making a different sized flag, you will need to make adjustments in the materials that you are using.
- Wine Bottle Corks. Your corks should be clean, dry, and intact.
- Acrylic Craft Paint My flag was made with red, white, and blue paint.
- Wooden Stars. Use craft stars that have not been painted.
- A Base. The base can be sturdy cardboard, scrap wood, or even a frame without the glass. My flag was made using a 6X9" cardboard that was cut from a box.
- Jute Twine. Used to make a hanger for the flag to be held from.
- Holographic glitter acrylic craft paint. Used to add sparkle to you stars.
- Also needed, Glue gun, glue sticks, scissors, pencil, ruler, and paintbrush.
How to make a Patriotic Flag Wine Cork Craft DIY.
This project should take around 30 minutes to make.
Step One: paint the corks and stars.
- Start by laying out 35 clean corks on your work surface, seven rows high and five columns wide.
- Paint 16 corks red, 13 corks white, and 6 corks blue.
- Paint three wooden stars with the white paint.
- For bolder colors, you can add an additional layer of paint once the first layer has dried.
Expert Tip👉 When painting your corks and stars you can add a small amount of water to your paint so that the printing on the cork shows through the paint. This can add additional interest to your flag.
Step Two: prepare the base.
While the paint from the last step is drying, you can prepare your base.
- To prepare a cardboard base, carefully measure and cut out a six inch by nine inch base to use.
- For scrap wood, make sure that you wood is clean and free of debris.
- To use a frame as a base, carefully remove the glass and then make sure that the cardboard layer that was under the glass is clean and free of debris. You may need to cut out a new cardboard layer if yours is not usable or not present.
Step Three: attach the elements to the base.
Once the corks have dried you can attach them to the base along with the other elements.
- Starting at the bottom of your base, use your glue gun to attach five red corks in a row.
- Next, attach a row of five white corks and then alternate gluing on red and white corks until your flag has four red stripes and three white stripes.
- Add the six blue corks to the top left-hand corner of your flag to represent the field of stars.
- Once all the corks have been glued in place, you can trim off any excess cardboard from the edges of your flag using your scissors.
- For the hanger, measure and cut a 12” length of natural jute twine. Then flip your flag over on your work surface and attach the twine hanger to the top right and top left hand corners using your glue gun.
- Lastly, use your paintbrush, in a dabbing motion, to add the holographic glitter acrylic craft paint to the three wooden stars to add some sparkle
