Tips for making a chocolate heart pinata.
This recipe for a pinata is works best using individual sized heart molds. To make this a large one serving pinata, you may need to make a few adjustments as needed with the ingredients and setting times.
More tips for you
- To get a good pinata, it is best to spread the chocolate evenly over the entire mold. You can use a pastry brush to help you do this.
- I like to use a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper as workspace for a recipe such as this one. This will make it easy for you to transfer the pinata as needed in this recipe.
- Melting the chocolate, in my opinion, is easiest in a microwave using a microwave safe bowl. If you prefer to use a double boiler instead, that is okay as well.

About this edible pinata for Valentines day.
This is a recipe for making edible chocolate pinatas using a heart shaped mold. After the melted chocolate that is added to the mold has set, the heart can be flipped over on to a surface and filled with candy.
To decorate the heart, we will first add melted dark chocolate to the mold.
We will then add the melted colored melts to the mold over the dark chocolate once it has set. To make this a two sided pinata, you can attach two of the hearts together using frosting or melted chocolate.
Ingredients needed to make an Edible Heart Pinata
- Dark Chocolate Melts. Used to make the decoration that will go on top of the pinata.
- Purple Candy Melts. Feel free to use another color if desired if you do not like the color of the hearts.
- Valentine's Day Sprinkles As desired.
- Candy for the filling. I suggest using M&M sized candies for best results.
How to make an Valentines Day Edible Heart Pinata
Step One: prepare.
Start by washing and drying the mold if it is new or has debris on it. Also, line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to use as your workspace.
Expert tip👉 The amount of heart pinatas that can be made depends on the size of the molds that you use. You can use one large mold for one pinata or smaller molds for more.
Step Two:melt the chocolates.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the dark chocolate following the directions on the packaging.
- Carefully drizzle the dark chocolate randomly over the inside of the molds.
- Allow the dark chocolate to mostly harden- about five minutes at room temperature.
- Meanwhile, you can melt the colored wafers, following the directions on the packaging.
- Place about two tablespoons of the colored melted wafers into the bottom of the molds. Then allow it to mostly harden- about seven minutes.
- Use the backside of a spoon to evenly disperse the somewhat melted wafers evenly over the molds.
- Allow the melted wafers to set for two minutes and repeat.
- Transfer the molds to your refrigerator to fully set (about ten minutes).
Expert tip👉 For a sturdy heart, the chocolate should be about a total of ⅛" thick.
Step Three: finish making the pinatas.
Once the hearts have fully set, you can remove them from the refrigerator and finish making the pinatas.
- Carefully peel the mold away from the hardened chocolate.
- Place the hearts on to a plate with the open side of the hearts up (facing you).
- Fill the inside with the chocolate candies.
- Place another plate on top of the heart (bottom side of the plate facing you), and flip the heart over keeping it between the two plates.
- Enjoy!
Expert tip👉 Making this as a gift? Use a plate that you intend to give with the heart as the top plate before flipping the heart over. This will make it easier to transfer or to place in a box for gift giving.
