To make this project you will need terra cotta (or terracotta) clay pots. You can find a variety of terra cotta pots here.
Why do people use clay pots for crafts projects?
Technically, they are the same thing.
The difference in the spelling simply comes from the dialect or who is spelling it.
Both terracotta and terra cotta pots are ceramic pots made from clay intended for use for plants. "Terra cotta" means "baked earth" in Italian.
It is the porous material used to make the pots that allows water and air to pass through effectively for the growth of plants. These pots relatively inexpensive, easy to make, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes that them a popular choice for gardening.
Here are some used for terracotta clay pots.
• To hold other items such as pens.
• When first soaked in water, these pots can be used for baking.
• Craft displays.
• And, for plants.
Tips for making an Acorn Craft DIY.
My acorn craft was made using a 2.5” in diameter clay pot. Feel free to use the size(s) clay pot(s) of your choice.
More tips for you
- Hot glue really works best at getting everything to stick to the pot securely and quickly. However, you can use a tacky or craft glue instead if you can wait for it to dry.
- There is a bit of painting that needs to get done for this project. Make sure that the paint gets fully dry before adding additional elements or coats of paint.
- If you have issues with the googly eyes staying in place, try attaching a clear water bottle cap to the pot first and then glue the eyes on to that.
- While this project is suitable for most ages, some folks may need a bit of assistance. This is especially true with gluing, cutting, and painting.

What you can do with a terracotta pot craft.
- Fill the acorn with candy to share with others.
- Use the acorn pot to hold a small plant.
- Surround the clay pot with small pumpkins for a cute display.
Materials needed to make a clay pot acorn.
- Terra Cotta Clay Pot. My acorn was made with a 3.5” pot.
- Clay Pot Saucer. Get one that fits your clay pot. My pot uses a three inch saucer.
- Googly Eyes. Also known as Wiggly Eyes.
- Wooden Stems. These are small round pieces of a tree branch that have been cut down. You can purchase this or cut down your own.
- Jute Twine. This gets tied on to the stem on top of the acorn. While the jute looks more 'fallish' a ribbon could alternatively do the job.
- Craft Paint – Light Brown, Dark Brown, Pink
- Equipment Needed: paint brush (flat and detail), scissors, glue gun with sticks, black market, and pencil's eraser (new pencil is best).
Expert Tip 👉 Many of these materials can be found at a dollar store or discount store.
How to make a Clay Pot Acorn Craft DIY.
Prep Time: 5 minutes.
Active Time: 20 minutes.
Step One: prepare.
- Gather your needed supplies.
- Make sure that your clay pot and saucer are free of debris and stickers.
- Prepare your workspace.
Step Two: Paint the clay pot and saucer.
- Paint the base of your clay pot with light brown acrylic craft paint.
- Next, paint the rim of the clay pot and saucer with the dark brown acrylic paint.
- Let the paint fully dry and then repeat the painting process if needed.
Expert Tip👉 You can use a small fan if needed to speed up the drying process.
Step Three: add the detailing to the pot and saucer.
- Using a detail paintbrush, create an “X” pattern around the rim of the clay pot with light brown acrylic craft paint.
- Next, place the clay pot saucer on top of the pot (as a lid) and continue the cross-hatching pattern.
- Allow the paint to dry and the repeat the "X" painting if needed.
Expert Tip👉 Instead of paint, you can alternatively use a light brown paint pen to make the pattern.
Step Four: finish making the acorn.
- Glue the wooden stem in the center of the clay saucer.
- For the eyes, glue the two googly or wiggle eyes next to each other towards the top of the pot.
- Then for the cheeks, dip a clean pencil eraser into the pink craft paint and make two dots just below the eyes and off to the sides.
- Using a black marker make a smile for the cheeks, connecting the cheeks.
- Lastly, use your jute twin to tie a bow around the wooden stem.

Instructions
- Paint the base of your clay pot with light brown acrylic craft paint. Also paint the rime of the clay pot and saucer with the dark brown acrylic paint. Let the paint fully dry and then repeat the painting process if needed.

- Lastly, use your just twin to tie a bow around the wooden stem
