    1. When filling the cake pan, only fill it to about half full. There will be expansion of the cakes while baking.
    2. Just after removing the baked cakes out of the oven loosen the cakes from the sides of the pan. Run a simple butter knife around the cake to do this.
    3. These snack cakes should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. If properly stored, they should keep for three to four days before they begin to dry out.

    Ingredients needed to make this Easy Homemade Copycat Twinkie Recipe.

    • Angel food cake mix. a 16 ounces (give or take, depending on who makes it...) box should work in this recipe.
    • Water. For the cake mix.
    • Vanilla Extract. Also for the cake.
    • Marshmallow Fluff. You can make your own or use a store bought version.
    • Shortening. This will help the filling get creamy so use a shortening that is creamy and soft.
    • Powdered Sugar. Used to sweeten the filling even more.
    • Water. Just enough to help the texture of the filling.

    Expert Tip 👉 Note that you just need the dry cake mix for this recipe and not the ingredients that are suppose to be used to actually make that cake mix.

    How to make Easy Homemade Copycat Twinkie Recipe

    Step One: prepare.

    Prep your Twinkie baking pan for nonstick. Preheat your oven to 325.

    Step Two: bake the cakes.

    1. Mix together the cake mix, water, and vanilla extract on a medium high speed until creamy.
    2. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan, filling it to about half full.
    3. Bake the cakes until they begin to turn golden brown- about 20-25 minutes.
    4. Run a butter knife around the edges of the cakes to loosen them up. Then take a large cutting board or cooling rack and place it on top of the cakes.
    5. Flip the cake pan over so that the cutting board or cooling rack in on the bottom.
    6. Allow the cakes to fully cool.

    Note: If you may need to make this recipe in batches if you do not have enough pans to bake the cakes in..

    Step Three: finish making the cakes.

    1. Meanwhile, as the cakes are cooling, you can make the center filling.
    2. Beat together the marshmallow fluff and shortening until they are creamy and smooth.
    3. Next, gradually add in the powdered sugar and then the water to the filling mixture and continue to mix until combined.
    4. Fill your piping bag, pastry tip, or injector with the filling.
    5. To fill the cakes, we will inject the filling into three spots on the bottom of each cake (center and sides). Try to get the filling deep, about ¾ of the way, into the cakes without going through the cakes.
    6. If you are using a piping bag, you can fit it with tip 230 (made for adding fillings to cupcakes).
    7. Flip all of the twinkies over.
    8. Enjoy!

    Expert Tip 👉 You can premake your holes in the bottom of each of the cakes using a skewer or similar shaped item.
