What is a Jack O Lantern?

Technically, a 'Jack O Lantern' is a term used to describe a carved pumpkin that has some kind of a light in it. Usually, the carved pieces will be facial features (eyes, nose, mouth..).

Jack O Lanterns are most often seen during the fall or Halloween season.
This is because that time of the year coincides with the harvesting of pumpkins.
Really, these lanterns can be made out of anything from plastic ro vegetables.

Tips for making a craft stick project.

This project is suitable for most ages. However, there are some folks who may need help with cutting and glueing in this project.

More tips for you.

  1. This project is more easy and quicker to complete when you use a glue gun. But, you can use a regular craft glue instead as long as you know that you will need to wait for the glue to dry.
  2. When lining up the sticks, you can use a couple of rulers, books, or similar object to help guide you. Simply place one on top and one on the bottom when you line up your sticks.
  3. I have provided you with a pattern that you can use to trace to make the facial features. Feel free to use your own patterns instead of mine.

Personalize your homemade Jack O Lantern Stick Craft

This craft idea is cute just the way it is.
However, you can make yours even better.

Try one of these ideas.

  • Use googly craft eyes instead of cutting and gluing your own.
  • Paint yours a different color other than orange.
  • Make a family using different sized sticks. You can glue them together on a large stick or board to display.

How to make this Halloween Jack O Lantern Popsicle Stick Craft.

Step One: prepare.

Gather your sticks and count them out. Heat up your glue gun and prepare your paint as needed.

Download the pattern here.

Expert TIP👉 You can use simple craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

Step Two: glue the sticks together.

Lay out five to six sticks and line them up evenly. Take another stick and glue it to the lined up sticks diagonally from the top right corner to the lower left corner. Then break or cut another stick in half. Glue the pieces of the sticks diagonally on both sides of the stick that you just glued into place.

Step Three: paint the sticks.

Once the glued together sticks have dried, flip the sticks over and paint the sticks orange. Allow the sticks to dry and give them another coat of paint as needed.

This is also a good time to paint an additional stick that will be used for the stem. Paint this stick brown.

Step Four: make the elements and attach them into place.

While the paint is drying, you can make the elements for the Jack O Lantern. For the face, simply cut out the features from the template and then trace and cut them from the black craft foam.

Turn the glued together sticks over so that the backside is exposed. Glue the brown painted stick into place as the stem. Then take a pipe cleaner and wrap â…” of it around your finger to make it curly. Glue the staight third of the pipe cleaner beside the stem.

Turn the project over so that you are looking at the front. Glue the facial features in place to finish the project.
