    This is a chocolaty dessert that is like the original Mississippi mud pie.

    Mississippi Mud Pie is a three layer dessert. The bottom layer is a chocolaty crust. In the center of the pie is a thick chocolaty pudding. On top there is a layer of whipped topping or ice cream. Some think the pie was inspired by the Mississippi river.

    This is a no bake recipe once you have made the Oreo based pie crusts. It is suggested that you allow the crusts to fully cool before adding the insides and toppings.

    1. instead of baking, these mud pies are frozen in order to set. It is best to leave them in the freezer until about five minutes before you are ready to serve them as they may melt or soften quickly.
      Make sure to use foil, not paper liners.
    2. To make this into individual sized cakes we are using a muffin or cupcake pan. Using foil cupcake liners is preferred as the paper kind tend to stick to these cakes.
    3. This recipe uses pudding as an ingredient for the chocolaty filling. Feel free to use the chocolate pudding of your choice.

    How to make the crust for Mud Pies.

    This is an Oreo cookie based crust. To make is you will need Oreo crumbs (2 cups) and melted butter (4 tablespoons or half a stick).

    How to make the mud pie crusts.

    • Prep your muffin tray with foil liners. Preheat your oven to 350.
    • In a mixing bowl, combine together the crushed cookies and melted butter.
    • When you are able to press the mixture together, use a tablespoon to transfer the mixture to the foil liners. You will need two tablespoons of mixture per liners for an average sized pan. Press or pack the mixture in well.
    • Bake the crusts until set, about seven to eight minutes.
    • Allow the crusting to fully cool before filling them.

    • Milk- 3 cups, divided.
    • Baking Chocolate- 4 ounces. You will need to chop the baking chocolate fine.
    • Chocolate Pudding Mix- 1 box (5.9 ounces).
    • Heavy Whipping Cream- ½ cups.
    • Vanilla Extract- 1 teaspoon (pure, not imitation).

    How to make Mississippi Mud Pie Cakes.

    Prep Time: 30 minutes.
    Cook Time: 15 minutes.
    Servings: 12 servings.

    Step One: prepare.

    Prepare the crusts as indicated above. Allow the crusts to cool. Also, make sure that your baking chocolate is finely chopped.

    Step Two: make the filling.

    • Heat one cup of the milk to about 120 degrees using a microwave or on the stove. The milk will be warm to touch but, not hot. While the milk is heating, place the pudding mix and the remaining milk in a mixing bowl.
    • Add the chopped chocolate to the warm milk and whisk until fully combined. Then transfer it to the mixing bowl with the other ingredients. Whisk to combine for a minute. Then allow this to sit for five minutes to thicken.
    • Once the mixture has thickened use a ladle or large spoon to evenly transfer the mixture to the crusts. Then place them into the freezer to set (they should be set in a couple of hours).

    Step Three: finish and serve.

    • When you are ready to serve the pies, remove the crusts from the freezer.
    • To make the topping layer, fit a stand mixer with a whisk attachment. Beat the heavy whipping cream with the vanilla on medium until stiff peaks form.
    • Top each pie with about a tablespoon of whipped topping. Then serve with chocolate chips and cocoa powder or as desired.
